Inflammation: Signal or Noise?
Inflammation heals wounds and fights infection. When the same pathways stay activated for months, they begin damaging the tissues they were meant to protect.

Two completely different processes
Acute inflammation is localized, rapid, and resolving — redness, heat, swelling after injury. Chronic low-grade inflammation is systemic, subtle, and persistent. It involves continuous elevation of cytokines like IL-6 and TNF-alpha at levels that do not produce obvious symptoms.
Chronic inflammation associates with atherosclerosis, insulin resistance, neurodegenerative disease, and accelerated aging at the cellular level through telomere attrition and oxidative stress.
Interpreting CRP and beyond
High-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) below 1.0 mg/L generally indicates low cardiovascular risk. Values above 3.0 warrant investigation — but context is critical. Recent infection, dental procedures, or intense exercise temporarily spike CRP.
CRP is a downstream marker, not a root cause. Treating the number without addressing source — visceral adiposity, sleep apnea, periodontal disease, autoimmune activity — misses the point.
Dietary modulation that holds up
Mediterranean dietary patterns consistently reduce inflammatory markers in randomized trials. Key components: olive oil polyphenols, fatty fish omega-3s, fiber fermentation products, and reduced refined sugar.
Omega-6 to omega-3 ratio matters because both compete for the same desaturase enzymes. Western diets skew heavily toward omega-6 seed oils, biasing toward pro-inflammatory eicosanoid production. Shifting toward fatty fish, walnuts, and flax without obsessive elimination produces measurable change.
Non-dietary drivers people overlook
Visceral fat acts as an endocrine organ secreting inflammatory adipokines. Sleep deprivation elevates IL-6 within a single night. Chronic psychological stress maintains HPA axis activation. Sedentary behavior independently raises inflammatory tone even in non-obese individuals.
Addressing inflammation effectively usually requires multiple simultaneous inputs — not a single superfood or supplement shortcut.
